Dr. Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation Symposium 2018

The 2018 Medical Symposium co-organized by the Dr. Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation and the Chinese University of Hong Kong was held on 13th and 14th January 2018 at the Macau Landmark. With an aim to bring in new break-through to the medical development in Macau, the Foundation has invited three world-class experts in Personalized Medicine from the University of Oxford this year to share their latest research findings.

The opening ceremony was held on the first day of the Symposium at the headquarters of the Foundation located on 9th Floor ICBC Tower of the Macau Landmark. The officiating guests include:

  • Mr. Patrick Huen, the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation;
  • Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, Mok Hing Yiu Professor of Medicine, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong;
  • Dr. Peter Lam, the Chair of the University Council of the University of Macau;
  • Prof. Agnes Lam, Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Macau SAR;
  • Mr. Cheang Kun Wai, Member of the Administrative Committee of the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund; and
  • Prof. Francis Chan, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

In the opening speech, Mr. Huen said the Foundation had accumulated 13 years of experience of organizing this Symposium and intended to make it even more internationalized this year. By inviting three renowned professors from Oxford to speak in Macau, the Symposium has become a world-class exchange platform for medical practitioners. He added the Foundation had also specifically arranged a meeting between the University of Macau and the Centre for Personalized Medicine and St. Anne’s College at Oxford to discuss on future collaboration. This move allows the Foundation to move one-step closer to its objective to elevate the healthcare standard of Macau.

Personalized Medicine has become an important trend for biomedical technology development and research in recent years globally. The concept of Personalized Medicine is to pinpoint individual’s genetic information to diagnose and predict response or risk of disease and tailor to the individual the most effective ways of treatment and prevention. The three topics on Personalized Medicine that the experts from Oxford have shared in the Symposium were “Inflammatory Bowel Diseases – a Western Disease Coming to the East”, “Peaks and Troughs in Personalized Cancer Therapy” and “The Genetics of Personalized Medicine” Challenge and Opportunity”.

In addition, the Foundation has also invited authoritative professors and clinical experts from Xiamen University, Chinese University of Hong Kong and National University of Taiwan to present on various topics from cancer treatment to elderly care, which are of most concern to the public in Macau. The Foundation is also grateful to have the directors and renowned medical doctors from Shih Chen University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hospital Conde S. Januário, Kiang Wu Hospital and Macau University of Science and Technology as guest moderators.
