In his opening speech, Mr. Patrick Huen reiterates the objective of the Foundation, which is to elevate the healthcare standard of Macau using the latest medical technologies. Since 2005, the Foundation has put tremendous effort in promoting the setting up of a medical school in Macau. Mr. Huen welcomes the first batch of medical school students and their Dean, Dr. Manson Fok and other senior member of the University of Science and Technology Macau (MUST) to join the 2020 symposium, and look forward to more joint efforts and collaboration between MUST and the Foundation in future.

According to Mr. Huen, The present Wuhan Pneumonia which keeps Macau and Hong Kong on the alert was no surprise to the Foundation which has supported The Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infection Diseases for over 16 years in generating new research knowledge and supporting strategy development in the prevention and control of emerging infections. The Centre concept was proposed by Professor Joseph Sung after the SARS incident in Hong Kong and was funded by Dr. Stanley Ho back in 2005

Looking forward, the Foundation believes internet and big data technology applications are of utmost importance to the future of Macau, thus it will try its best to promote the use of IT technology among medical practitioners in Macau and the region. Professor Joseph Sung has joined Prof. Helen Meng to co-chair the Stanley Ho Big Data Decision Analytics Research Centre which was formed in 2013, and will help introduce the latest knowledge and applications first to Macau then to the Greater Bay Area, by building a digital platform for the exchange of updated information amongst the region’s 70,000,000 population. The platform will make use of 5G, AI and other eLearning technologies which the Foundation has brought to Macau via Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professors in previous years.

Mr. Huen stresses the importance of using technology to keep up with time, and be visionary in the Foundation’s development of and service for Macau. The Foundation presented two Outstanding Achievement Awards to the medical teams at Kiang Wu Hospital and the Conde S. Januario Hospital this year, recognizing their exemplary performance in raising the surgical standards in their specialty area.

The ten topics and speakers of this year’s symposium center around three major themes: (1) use of AI and Big Data in medical research, (2) Diseases and issues of great concern to Macau people, (3) Advances and development in surgical operations. Mr. Huen wishes to see the latest technologies being applied not only in Macau but also The Greater Bay Area, and eventually become medical tourism attractions for Macau as a hub of attractions.

The Medical Symposium has becoming the most popular learning and sharing platform for the local healthcare professionals and students. More than 500 participants have registered this year, and the presentations were also broadcast live and will be put on the YouTube channel of Foundation for public viewing.
